Tennessee Williams is considered to be the most important American dramatist of the post- World War II era. His plays show "primitive violence -a quality he believes lurks beneath the surface of modern life." He lived for thirty years in Key West. On January 5, 1979, his gardener was murdered, since then he was attacked twice in the streets, and one evening some children went to the doorstep of his home and yelled to this great American playwright "come on out, faggot!" He moved later to New York where he died in a hotel room in 1983 at the age of 71.

On June 1982 was presented the "New World Festival of The Arts," in Dade County, a three-week celebration of the arts. As part of this Festival it was shown in the Gusman Cultural Center in downtown Miami Tennessee Williams last play "A House Not Meant to Stand." I had the privilege to see this play Thursday, June 17, 1982, at 2:30 PM.
.
"A House Not Meant to Stand" is not among the best plays of Tennessee Williams although one critic said "it is probably the best thing the playwright has written since "Small Craft Warnings," a decade ago. Williams called this dark comedy a "Southern Gothic spook sonata."
.
The plot is about Cornelius and his wife Bella McCorkle from Pascagoula, Mississippi. They have three children. Their older son, a gay man, has just died. Their daughter is in an insane asylum, and their younger son Charlie is upstairs having sex with his girlfriend. This family is falling apart together with their three spectral children.
