Last Tuesday of January 2008

Let's stroll for a little while in cyberspace using my blog Space Walking XXI.
Today is the last Tuesday of January. The day is beautiful, cool and dry, in contrast with other parts of the country and some regions of the world. We're lucky. That's the reason Florida is called "the sunshine state," although it's not always true. Idaho, Utah and Washington are having snowstorms. China is also having snowstorms, and in Fiji, in the southern hemisphere, a cyclone has killed six people.
.
In a recent article of the New York Times titled "What Happened in Vegas Stayed in (Vegas) His Novel," by Charles McGrath he says that writer Charles Bock, 38, was a little old to be a first novelist. Although young age is a very important factor in music, mathematics, chess and competitive sports I think that in literature can be more space for creating a good work. Some people may disagree with my point of view and that would be an interesting theme to debate.

Chess for Blood and Chess for Money

One of the strongest chess tournaments in the world is being played now in Wijk aan Zee, Holland, the Corus Chess Tournament 2008. The best chess players of the world are present in this small dutch town which is very close to the North Sea.
.
In round 11 there was a strong battle of the minds between the Norwegian wunderkind Magnus Carlsen and the Indian Vishy Anand who is the present World Champion. The lad from Norway, playing with the White men, launched a piercing attack in the kingside of the chessboard against the Black King. Although Anand had the King already barricaded the defenses began to crumble before the sharp attack. Magnus, on his part, lost material in his attack and Anand was able to move away his King. Finally the skillful Indian champion won by a hair this game.
.
This was a game of chess for blood and, of course, for money also.

Night and Day

There is a street in Miami Beach that never sleeeps, that doesn't even takes a "siesta." It is a street where the food is plentiful, and the music either joyful or romantic with, sometimes, the noise of the vehicles in the background. The voice of a singer is heard at times intoning his verses while at some distance the ocean murmurs its sounds. The street is alive. It is Ocean Drive.

Bobby Fischer 1943-2008

.
Bobby Fischer passed away last Thursday, January 17, in Reykjavik, Iceland, in the same city where he took his name to new heights 36 years ago. After a long illness he died of kidney failure. He was 64 years old, the same number of squares of the chessboard. He is considered to be one of the greatest chess player in the history of this sport.
.
Dr. Max Euwe wrote in his book "Bobby Fischer -The Greatest?", 1979, that "it is much more interesting to compare Fischer with Lasker, Capablanca, and Alekhine than with some of the living ex-world champions who have played with Fischer over the board." (This book was written in 1979 so Gary Kasparov has not appeared yet in the chess world).
.
His personality was sometimes unconventional bordering the paranoia. It looks that as a child he was not raised properly by his mother & later he was a high school dropout. This may explain his outbursts & sometimes abnormal behavior later in his life.

Space

Space, in this case, is one of the 3 elements of the physical world. The other 2 are, as any high school student knows, velocity and time. Thus the equation S = V x T. However I'm not here for talking about Physics, this is really an excuse for opening this Blog with a very rational subject in a world that's not always very rational.
.
Irrationality and chaos sometimes prevails over order & logic, unfortunately. Maybe this is the result of Struggle, in Charles Darwin words "the struggle for existence." Or the need of Nature, to which we belong, "to alters and changes," as the Greek phylosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus said. Heraclitus believed in war. "We must know," Heraclitus said, "that war is common to all and Strife is justice, and that all things come into being and pass away through Strife." My hopes are for Peace.
