.Tennessee Williams is considered to be the most important American dramatist of the post- World War II era. His plays show "primitive violence -a quality he believes lurks beneath the surface of modern life." He lived for thirty years in Key West. On January 5, 1979, his gardener was murdered, since then he was attacked twice in the streets, and one evening some children went to the doorstep of his home and yelled to this great American playwright "come on out, faggot!" He moved later to New York where he died in a hotel room in 1983 at the age of 71.

The above tour to St. Augustine was a pilgrimage sponsored by the Father Felix Varela Foundation of the Shrine of Our Lady of Charity (Catholic Church), in Miami. It was under the benevolent direction and supervision of Monsignor Agustin Roman and the help of Rev. Deacon Manolo Perez. I would like to thanks Dr. Rafael B. Abislaiman for the important data he gave to us about Father Felix Varela in San Agustin; his book "Pilgrimaging to San Agustin" is very valuable as a source of information. My special thanks to Mrs. Margarita Miranda who brought me back to my home Sunday night.

Barack H. Obama President of the United States of America
Foto de Damon Winter. El New York Times

Barack H. Obama was elected as the 44th president of the United States of America. He is 47 years old and a first term senator from Illinois. He's a charismatic politician and an excellent orator. Senator Obama told a huge crowd in Chicago "if there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our times, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer."

In the mid 1960's I went to the British consulate in Havana for inquiring for a transit visa to Jamaica. The clerk, a young man like me, gave me the information about the requirements for getting the visa. I thanked him and I turned around to leave the office but then I stopped. I saw a large glass slide door and outside, in the distance, The Castillo de los Tres Santos Reyes Magos del Morro (The Morro Castle). I had to smile, it was a brilliant military victory of the British Arms. And a part of Cuban history that all Cuban schoolchildren know by heart: The Storming of Havana by the English on June 6, 1762.

In the seventeen century England became the strongest maritime power on the Atlantic as the might of Spain and Holland navies declined on the seas.
.
In the eighteen century the danger of France hegemony under Louis XIV brought the concept of the "balance of power." Under this doctrine no single power or group of powers should be allowed to develop enough strength in order to dominate all others. When in continental Europe the balance of power was upset England will throw all her military might on the weaker side to restore the balance. Several wars occurred in Europe in the eighteen century and among them the "Seven Years' War", 1756-1763, which took on global dimensions. It was fought in three continents -Europe, Asia and America. Battles were fought between England and France in the Atlantic, North America and India. Later Spain joined France in a pacte de famille against England. The results of this war was disastrous to France who lost her possessions in India and most of them in North America, and was left bankrupt. The "Seven Years' War" gave rise to the British Empire.
.
The village la Habana was founded in the south coast of Cuba probably in 1515. This settlement found very adverse conditions. Diseases due to the swampy lands and a very hot and humid weather. In 1519 they moved the village to its present location in the north coast. The climate was much better than the south and it also had a harbor for the ships. The village of Havana began to grow and prosper rapidly as Spanish galleons from South America with their riches stopped in the harbor of Havana in their way to Spain. In the sixteen century it received a royal recognition from the Spanish King for the strategic importance and it was entitled City of San Cristobal de la Habana.
.
The economic prosperity that brought to Havana the merchant galleons with their treasures from South America also brought dangers. The pirates and corsairs from France, Holland and England attacked and pillaged villages in the coast of Cuba. The French pirate Jacques de Sores attacked and pillage Havana in 1555. The English pirate Hawkins also attacked villages in the island. Dutch pirates and the English corsair Sir Francis Drake were marauding the Cuban costs. On 1558 King Phillip II signed a decree that ordered to construct a new Castillo de la Real Fuerza. Two strong fortresses were built later on each side of the narrow harbor mouth. It was hoped that these constructions would discouraged the pirates of more attacks to the city. Havana's reputation as a well fortified city was established. On May 1634 a royal decree declared that it was 'the Key to the New World and Bulwark of the West Indies.'
The description was confirmed by the City's Coat of Arms. The city had many public buildings, churches and convents and its port was a great dockyard.
.
During the Seven Years' War Spanish King Charles III signed a pacte de famille with France against England. On January 1762 King George III declared war on Spain. The plan for an attack on Havana was presented to the English government and it was approved. The capture of the city of Havana was worth a military expedition. The commander of the fleet was given to Sir George Pocock. His fleet consisted of about 50 warships and hospital, transport and supply vessels. George Keppel, Third Earl of Albermarle, was given the command of the troops despite he was considered to be just 'one of those showy men who are seen in palaces . . .' He had under his command over 11,000 soldiers and several hundred Negro slaves. Spanish Governor Juan de Prado was unaware of the British plans and the people of Havana trusted that the city was very well fortified. It wasn't for this kind of military invasion.
