2008 Capablanca Memorial in Havana.

The XLIV International Chess Tournament "Capablanca in Memoriam" is being held in Havana from May 7 to May 18. Several Grandmasters from different countries are participating in this tournament which has been held for at least 45 years. Dutch Grandmaster and Champion of Europe Sergei Tiviakov is among the participants as well GM Radoslaw Wojtaszek from Poland, GM Faruk Amonotov from Tajikistan, GM Igor Khenkin from Germany, GM Lenier Dominguez Perez and Lazaro Bruzon from Cuba. Many other Grandmasters have participated in previous "Capablanca in Memoriam" tournaments like GM Vasily Smislov whom I had the honor to get his autograph in the "Habana Libre" hotel in 1962. Also GM Boris Spassky, GM Mikhail Tal, and GM Bobby Fischer.

The pictures shown above of the Fort Morro, the city of Havana and the tournament were taken by GM Sergei Tiviakov who is representing the Netherlands in this tournament. Mr. Tiviakov has also proven to be an excellent photographer. He took more than eighty pictures of the city of Havana. Jose Raul Capablanca was born in Havana, Cuba, on November 1888 and died on March 1942 in New York City, United States. He had two children with his first wife Gloria but they later divorced. He remarrried in 1937 with a beautiful Russian emigre, Olga Choubaroff, whom he met in New York. Their marriage was a happy one and lasted until his death of a stroke at the Manhattan Chess Club in New York City at the age of 53 years old.

El XLIV Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez "Capablanca in Memoriam" se celebra en La Habana a partir del 7 de mayo al 18 de mayo. Varios Granmaestros de distintos países están participando en este torneo que se ha celebrado desde hace por lo menos 45 años. Los Países Bajos y el Gran Campeón de Europa Sergei Tiviakov son algunos de los participantes así como el GM Wojtaszek Radoslaw de Polonia, GM Faruk Amonotov de Tayikistán, GM Igor Khenkin de Alemania, GM Lenier Domínguez Pérez y Lázaro Bruzon de Cuba. Muchos otros Granmaestros han participado en anteriores toneos "Capablanca in Memoriam" tal como el GM Vasily Smislov con quien tuve el honor de obtener su autógrafo en el hotel "Habana Libre" en 1962. Tambien los Granmaestros Boris Spassky, Mikhail Tal y Bobby Fischer han participado en este torneo.

Tuvo dos hijos con su primera esposa Gloria, pero más tarde se divorciaron. Él se volvio a car en 1937 con una bella emigre de Rusia, Olga Choubaroff, a quien conoció en Nueva York. Su matrimonio fue uno feliz y duró hasta su muerte de un derrame cerebral en el Manhattan Chess Club en la ciudad de Nueva York a la edad de 53 años.
