The Seventh Anniversary of 9/11 Terrorist Attacks.

Last Thursday was the Seventh Anniversary of the September 11 attacks by terrorists to New York's World Trade Center Twin Towers and to the Pentagon in Virginia. The attacks to the World Trade Centers were in particular sensitive for me because I am quite familiar with lower Manhattan. I worked for several years in that area.
In 1966 I worked as banking clerk in Exchange Place, later in a securities firm in Pine Street, and later in another financial corporation in 67 Broad Street as an accounting clerk. In the lunch time I always went out for a walk and I enjoyed these strolls in the always busy streets of downtown Manhattan. Broad Street, Wall Street, Nassau Street, Rector Street, Trinity Church, Battery Park were always, one day or another, part of my strolls. In 1971 I moved with my family to Miami. That was also a very good year.

Hurricanes Gustav and Ike have left a trail of destruction and misery in the Caribbean islands of Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba. Haiti in particular has had many deaths because it is a very poor country with very little resources of its own. In Cuba the damage caused by Ike is considered to be between $3 to $4 billion according to the United Nations. There have been extensive damages to homes, buildings, agriculture and power supply by the electric company. Hurricane Ike has also hit very hard Texas and there are nearly 3 million people without electricity in the Houston area. Rescue to people in Galveston are extremely difficult.

El Séptimo Aniversario de los Ataques Terroristas del 9/11.

El jueves pasado fue el séptimo aniversario de los ataques del 11 de septiembre por los terroristas al Nueva York World Trade Center Torres Gemelas y al Pentágono en Virginia. Los ataques al World Trade Centers me fueron sensibles en particular porque estoy bastante familiarizado con la zona baja de Manhattan. Trabajé durante varios años en esa zona. En 1966 trabajaba como empleado bancario en la calle Exchange Place, más tarde en una empresa financiera de Valores en Pine Street, y después en otra corporación financiera en el 67 Broad Street como empleado de contabilidad. A la hora del almuerzo siempre salía a dar un paseo los que disfrutaba al ver las calles siempre llenas de transeúntes y de vehículos. Las calles Broad Street, Wall Street, Nassau Street, Rector Street, y Trinity Church y Battery Park siempre fueron, un día u otro, parte de mis recorridos. En 1971 me mudé con mi familia a Miami. Ese fue también un año muy bueno.

Los huracanes Gustav e Ike han dejado un rastro de destrucción y de miseria en las islas del Caribe de la República Dominicana, de Haití y de Cuba. Haití, en particular, ha tenido muchas muertes porque es un país muy pobre con muy poco recursos propios. En Cuba los daños causados por Ike se considera entre $ 3 a $ 4 mil millones según las Naciones Unidas. Se han producido grandes daños a las casas, los edificios, la agricultura y al suministro de electricidad por la compañía eléctrica. El huracán Ike también ha golpeado muy fuertemente a Texas y hay casi 3 millones de personas sin electricidad en el área de Houston. El rescate de personas en Galveston es extremadamente difícil.

Poderosas instituciones financieras en Wall Street se encuentran en una profunda crisis económica. Lehman Brothers se declaró en quiebra en busca de protección legal y Merril Lynch acordó venderse al Bank of America por $ 50 mil millones. Esta crisis financiera en los Estados Unidos está repercutiendo en los mercados de valores del resto del mundo.
