Next November 4 will be held the elections for choosing the next President of the United States.
.
For the Republican party the candidate will be Mr. John McCain and for the Democratic party will be Mr. Barack Obama. Both candidates have told the American people that changes are necessary in order to move forward this country again. However they have different views in the methods to achieve these changes. The economy is stagnant, the unemployment is high by US standards and the American people have the worst health care protection of all the industrialized countries of the Western world.

The race for the White House has taken off between the Tortoise (Mr. McCain) and the Hare (Mr. Obama).

The Economy.
.
The unemployment rate in the U.S. went up to 6.1 percent in August which is the highest in five years. Also the American economy lost 84,000 private nonfarms jobs in August alone. The poor state of the American economy has hit hard the world markets. US and European shares have fallen sharply for this reason. Also rumours of hedge fund failures have contributed to the fall of the stock markets.

The Hurricane Season.
.
The Atlantic basin is very active with several tropical storms at the present time. A train of three tropical storms are keeping the Caribbean islands inhabitants on edge. The peninsula of Florida is being caught in a cross fire of tropical storms from Mother Nature. It is true that September is always the peak of hurricane activities but this year has been worst than others.
.
The Lake Okeechobee, which is located in the center of the peninsula, is almost full of water for the rain that Fay brought. The water level as of September 5 is 14.78 ft. The Army Corps of Engineers said last Tuesday, September 2, that they will be draining the lake to begin slowing "the lake's record-setting rise -- and lowering the potential risk to its aging levee." This big lake is a drinking water source for many communities around it.

El próximo 4 de noviembre se celebrarán las elecciones para elegir al próximo Presidente de los Estados Unidos.

Por el Partido Republicano el candidato será el Sr. John McCain y por el Partido Demócrata será el Sr. Barack Obama. Ambos candidatos le han dicho al pueblo estadounidense de que cambios son necesarios a fin de hacer avanzar a este país de nuevo. Sin embargo, tienen diferentes opiniones en los métodos a utilizar para lograr estos cambios. La economía está estancada, el desempleo es alto por los estándar de los EE.UU. y el pueblo de los Estados Unidos tienen el peor sistema de cuidado a la salud de todos los países industrializados del mundo occidental.

La carrera por la Casa Blanca ha empezado ya entre la Tortuga (el Sr. McCain) y la Liebre (el Sr. Obama).

La tasa de desempleo en los EE.UU. subió a un 6,1 por ciento en agosto que es el más alto en cinco años. También la economía norteamericana perdió 84.000 puestos de trabajo privado no agrícolas solo en agosto. El mal estado de la economía americana ha asestado un duro golpe a los mercados bursátiles en el resto del mundo. En los EE.UU. y en Europa las acciones han caído bruscamente por este motivo. También los rumores de fallos de los fondos de cobertura han contribuido a la caída de los mercados de valores.

La Temporada de Huracanes.

La cuenca atlántica está muy activa en este momento con varias perturbaciones ciclónicas. Un tren de tres tormentas tropicales tienen en vela a las poblaciones de las islas del Caribe. La península de la Florida está atrapada en un fuego cruzado de tormentas tropicales provocados por la Madre Naturaleza. Es cierto que septiembre ha sido siempre el punto más alto en las actividades de los huracánes pero este año ha sido peor que los pasados.

El Lago Okeechobee, que se encuentra en el centro de la península, está casi lleno de agua de la lluvia que trajo Fay. El nivel del agua a partir de septiembre ha sido casi de 15 pies (14.78 ft., 4.57 metros). El Cuerpo de Ingenieros del Ejército dijo el pasado martes, 2 de septiembre, que harán el drenaje del lago para empezar a disminuir "el récord del nivel del agua alcanzado por el lago - y reducir el riesgo potencial de sus ya envejecidos diques". Este gran lago es una fuente de agua potable para muchas comunidades que están a su alrededor.
