On August 1965 I visited Hemingway's house "Finca Vigia," in the town of Cojimar, Havana. The Cuban communist government already had the house as a museum of the late American writer. There were still a few cats around "Finca Vigia." The guide took us inside the house and we could see bookcases and shelves with many books in different rooms.

After WWII Hemingway came back to his home in Havana. He wrote the novelette "The Old Man and The Sea" which was published in 1952. In 1953 he received the Pulitzer Prize in fiction for this work and in 1954 the Nobel Prize for Literature.

The story of "The Old Man and The Sea" is about a Cuban fisherman, Santiago, who after several days in the sea finally caught a giant marlin. In his way back to land he lost his treasured catch eaten by the sharks.

This story has been interpreted "as an allegory of man's inevitable defeat in the struggle with existence; in spite of defeat, however, man can fight with dignity, courage, and stoicism."

En agosto de 1965 visité la casa de Hemingway "Finca Vigía" en el poblado de Cojimar, la Habana. El gobierno comunista cubano ya tenía la casa del difunto escritor americano como un museo. Aún quedaban unos pocos gatos en los alrededores de "Finca Vigía". El guía nos llevó dentro de la casa y pudimos ver libreros y estantes con muchos libros en las diferentes habitaciones.

Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial Hemingway regresó a su casa en la Habana. Escribió la novela corta "El viejo y el mar" que se publicó en 1952. En 1953 recibió el Premio Pulitzer en ficción por esta obra y en 1954 recibió el Premio Nobel de Literatura.

La historia de "El viejo y el mar" es acerca de un pescador cubano, Santiago, que después de varios días en el mar finalmente capturó una aguja gigante. En su camino de regreso a tierra perdió su atesorada pesca comida por los tiburones.

Esta historia se ha interpretado "como una alegoría de la inevitable derrota del hombre en la lucha con la existencia; a pesar de la derrota, sin embargo, el hombre puede luchar con dignidad, coraje y estoicismo".
