Chess and The Seventh Art

Painting from 1480 in a medieval church in Taby, north of Stockholm. It depicts a man playing chess with a skeletal Death. It inspired Ingmar Bergman for writing his play Wood Painting that later developed in the movie The Seventh Seal.
.
Chess has been for a long time a favorite theme in movies. The conflicts, struggles of human life are sometimes related to the conflict that occurs on the chessboard. Or the obsession for the game in an immature personality may create a human drama. This was the case in the novel "The Luzhin Defence," by Vladimir Nabokov. The movie version of Nabokov's novel was shown in 2001.
.
Ingmar Bergman film the Seventh Seal, 1958, is about a knight, Antonius Block, who returns with his squire, Jons, from the Crusades. He is returning to his castle in Sweden where his wife, Landgre, has been waiting for him for ten years. These are the Dark Ages and the Black Plague is everywhere. Death arrives to take the knight and his squire away but Antonius Block try to convince Death to give him another chance. He proposes Death to play a game of chess and if he loses he will let Death to take him away but if he wins Death must promise to stay away. Death find this amusing because he knows he never loses at anything. The movie is based on a short play by Bergman and it was a low-budget production. It won the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1957, and it made Bergman a celebrity.
.
"Searching for Bobby Fischer," 1993, is not a movie "about chess," but about the relationship of a chess child prodigy and his parents. It is based in a true story of Josh Waitzkin. In the movie "Casablanca," 1942, Humphrey Bogart plays a game of chess and in real life he was considered to be a strong player.
