Gutenberg's invention of the printer in the 14th century brought a revolution in writing. Books were no longer written by hand on parchments by monks in the monasteries, instead they were printed on papers. The printed sheets allowed that the books could be published in series. Eventually private libraries began to appear. Reading and knowledge were no longer the monopoly of the Church.

This predominance of the bounded book has lasted until recently. Computer science and new information technologies are changing the way we learn and communicate with each other. The Internet has become the ideal medium of communication.

In his book The Gutenberg Elegies, American essayist and literary critic Sven Birkerts asks "What is the place of reading, and of the reading sensibility, in our (electronic) culture as it has become?" I think that the importance of the printed text is as solid as ever within the frame of the new information technologies. One reason is that the durability of the paper is unmatched, so far, by any electronic device. Therefore, reading literature will eventually recover most of its importance after the present high tide of high-tech culture recedes.

I have in my living room a picture of the painting A Young Girl Reading, 1776, by French painter Fragonard and, while I look at it, I am thinking that these were times when reading was an enjoyment for the educated person.

El invento de Gutenberg de la imprenta en el siglo 14 trajo una revolución en la escritura. Los libros ya no eran escritos a mano en pergaminos por los monjes en los monasterios sino que fueron impresos en papeles. Las hojas impresas permitían que los libros pudieran ser publicados en serie. Eventualmente las bibliotecas privadas comenzaron a aparecer. La lectura y el conocimiento ya no eran el monopolio de la Iglesia.

Este predominio del libro encuadernado ha durado hasta hace poco. La Informática y las nuevas tecnologías de información están cambiando la forma de aprender y de comunicarse unos con otros. La Internet se ha convertido en el medio ideal de comunicación.

En su libro "Las Elegías de Gutenberg," el ensayista y crítico literario americano Sven Birkerts pregunta "¿Cuál es el lugar de la lectura, y de la lectura con sensibilidad, en nuestra cultura (electrónica) tal como se ha vuelto?" Creo que la importancia del texto impreso es tan sólida como siempre dentro del marco de las nuevas tecnologías de la información. Una de las razones es que la durabilidad del papel es inigualable, hasta ahora, por cualquier dispositivo electrónico. Por lo tanto, leer literatura eventualmente recuperará la mayor parte de su importancia después de que retroceda la actual marea alta de alta tecnología de la cultura.

Tengo en mi sala una reproducción de la pintura Una Muchacha Joven Leyendo, 1776, por el pintor francés Fragonard y cuando lo miro estoy pensando de que se trataba de tiempos en que la lectura era un disfrute para la persona educada.
